Abstract:With the development of the carbon markets (CMs) and electricity markets (EMs), discrepancies in prices between the two markets and between two time periods offer profit opportunities for generation companies (GenCos). Motivated by the carbon option and Black-Scholes (B-S) model, GenCos are given the right but not the obligation to trade carbon emission allowances (CEAs) and use instruments to hedge against price risks. To model the strategic behaviors of GenCos that capitalize on these cross-market and cross-time opportunities, a multi-market trading strategy that incorporates option-jointed daily trading and reinforcement learning-jointed weekly continuous trading are modeled. The daily trading is built with a bi-level structure, where a profit-oriented bidding model that jointly considers both the optimal CEA holding shares and the best bidding curves is developed at the upper level. At the lower level, in addition to market clearing models of the day-ahead EM and auction-based CM, a B-S model that considers carbon trading asynchronism and option pricing is constructed. Then, by expanding the daily trading, the weekly continuous trading is modeled and solved using reinforcement learning. Binary expansion and strike-to-spot price ratio are utilized to address the nonlinearity. Finally, case studies on an IEEE 30-bus system are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed trading strategy. Results show that the proposed trading strategy can increase GenCo profits by influencing market prices and leveraging carbon options.

Abstract:To address the strong thermoelectric coupling of the combined heat and power (CHP) units, the low utilization rate of energy storage, and the underexploitation of load-side resource flexibility in integrated energy systems (IESs), this paper proposes an optimal scheduling model of an IES in low-carbon communities considering flexibility of resources and the segmental control of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Firstly, by replacing the gas turbine (GT) in the CHP unit with an SOFC array to reduce carbon emissions and simultaneously weakening the thermoelectric coupling of the CHP unit, the segmental control method is used to control the SOFC array to improve the overall efficiency of the CHP unit. Secondly, coupled interactions among different types of energy storage equipments are mobilized through the integrated energy storage system to make full use of the remaining space in the heat and natural gas storage tanks. Finally, load-side flexible resources are utilized by considering transferable, substitutable, and heat loads, taking into account the thermal inertia of the building and categorizing rooms based on floors, orientations, and room area. Additionally, different user characteristics are characterized, and the flexible resources of building heating periods in northern cities in China are tapped in depth according to the actual factors. Compared with the traditional model, the optimal scheduling model proposed in this paper can reduce the wind abandonment rate and the carbon emission of community-integrated energy system (CIES) by 4.54% and 70.63%, respectively, and increase the utilization rate of heat and natural gas storage tanks by 12.34% and 30.52%, respectively, and lower the total cost by ¥2183.6 under the premise of ensuring user comfort during energy consumption, which promotes the economic and low-carbon operation of the CIES.

Abstract:This paper presents a holistic pricing and distributed scheduling framework for multi-microgrid system (MMGS) that considers the supply‒demand relationships of the coupled electricity‒carbon market to promote collaborative market trading within the MMGS for economic and environmental benefit improvement. Initially, an operation model of each microgrid is developed by synthetically considering electricity-carbon operational constraints related to generation units and energy storage units. Then, a collaborative optimization strategy of the MMGS is established according to the Nash bargaining game (NBG) model with the objective of maximizing overall operational revenue. To determine the trading schedule, an accelerated prediction-correction-based alternating direction method of multipliers (PCB-ADMM) algorithm is employed to derive the optimal scheduling strategy of MMGS in a distributed manner, ensuring the privacy preservation of individual microgrids. For electricity-carbon pricing, a supply-demand ratio (SDR) based pricing strategy is proposed to dynamically update electricity and carbon allowance prices, which fundamentally guides and incentivizes each microgrid to trade within the MMGS preferentially rather than with an upstream distribution network. Finally, a study case verifies the effectiveness of the proposed framework in enhancing the operation economy and environmental friendliness of the entire MMGS.

Abstract:Planning the low-carbon transition pathway of the power sector to meet the carbon neutrality goal poses a significant challenge due to the complex interplay of temporal, spatial, and cross-domain factors. A novel framework is proposed, grounded in the cyber-physical-social system in energy (CPSSE) and whole-reductionism thinking (WRT), incorporating a tailored mathematical model and optimization method to formalize the co-optimization of carbon reduction and carbon sequestration in the power sector. Using the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality transition of China as a case study, clustering method is employed to construct a diverse set of strategically distinct carbon trajectories. For each trajectory, the evolution of the generation mix and the deployment pathways of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies are analyzed, identifying the optimal transition pathway based on the criterion of minimizing cumulative economic costs. Further, by comparing non-fossil energy substitution and CCS retrofitting in thermal power, the analysis highlights the potential for co-optimization of carbon reduction and carbon sequestration. The results demonstrate that leveraging the spatiotemporal complementarities between the two can substantially lower the economic cost of achieving carbon neutrality, providing insights for integrated decarbonization strategies in power system planning.

Abstract:The increasing focus on carbon neutrality has led to heightened interest in multiple microgrids (MGs) due to their potential to significantly reduce emissions by the integrated electricity-heat-carbon sharing among them. In this paper, a decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) framework for integrated electricity-heat-carbon sharing is proposed to optimize the trading process of multi-energy and carbon among multiple MGs. The proposed framework considers certified emission reductions (CERs) of photovoltaic (PV) systems in each MG, and carbon allocation and trading among multiple MGs. The P2P trading behaviors among multiple MGs are modelled as a non-cooperative game. A decentralized optimization method is then developed using a price-based incentive scheme to solve the non-cooperative game and optimize the transactions of the electricity-heat-carbon jointly. The optimization problem is solved using sub-gradient in a decentralized manner. And the Nash equilibrium of the non-cooperative game is proven to exist uniquely, ensuring the convergence of the model. Furthermore, the proposed decentralized optimization method safeguards the private information of the MGs. Numerical results show that the total operational cost of the MGs and the carbon emissions can be reduced significantly.

Abstract:Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading enables an efficient regulation of distributed renewable energy among prosumers, implicitly promoting low-carbon operation. This study proposes a novel P2P energy trading scheme with coupled electricity-carbon (E/C) market that co-optimizes both power and carbon emission flows. To facilitate the low-carbon operations in the market, we introduce a prosumer-driven carbon-aware distribution locational marginal price (PDC-DLMP) to serve as a pricing signal for the distribution system operator (DSO). To efficiently determine the optimal trading solutions, we adopt a two-layer data-driven approach. The first layer employs a reinforcement learning algorithm named multi-agent twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (MATD3); the second layer uses a deep neural network (DNN) driven surrogate model, which is designed to map the PDC-DLMP signals, thereby eliminating the need for direct DSO intervention during market operation. This approach protects the physical model parameters of the distribution network and ensures multi-level privacy protection. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed P2P energy trading scheme with coupled E/C market, demonstrating its ability to achieve both reduced carbon emissions and lower operational costs for microgrid prosumers.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel multi-objective optimization model of integrated energy systems (IESs) is proposed based on the ladder-type carbon emission trading mechanism and refined load demand response strategies. First, the carbon emission trading mechanism is introduced into the optimal scheduling of IESs, and a ladder-type carbon emission cost calculation model based on rewards and penalties is established to strictly control the carbon emissions of the system. Then, according to different response characteristics of electric load and heating load, a refined load demand response model is built based on the price elasticity matrix and substitutability of energy supply mode. On these basis, a multi-objective optimization model of IESs is established, which aims to minimize the total operating cost and the renewable energy source (RES) curtailment. Finally, based on typical case studies, the simulation results show that the proposed model can effectively improve the economic benefits of IESs and the utilization efficiency of RESs.

Abstract:Carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems can provide sufficient carbon raw materials for power-to-gas (P2G) systems to reduce the carbon emission of traditional coal-fired units, which helps to achieve low-carbon dispatch of integrated energy systems (IESs). In this study, an extended carbon-emission flow model that integrates CCS-P2G coordinated operation and low-carbon characteristics of an energy storage system (ESS) is proposed. On the energy supply side, the coupling relationship between CCS and P2G systems is established to realize the low-carbon economic operation of P2G systems. On the energy storage side, the concept of “ state of carbon” is introduced to describe the carbon emission characteristics of the ESS to exploit the potential of coordinated low-carbon dispatch in terms of both energy production and storage. In addition, a low-carbon economic dispatch model that considers multiple uncertainties, including wind power output, electricity price, and load demands, is established. To solve the model efficiently, a parallel multidimensional approximate dynamic programming algorithm is adopted, while the solution efficiency is significantly improved over that of stochastic optimization without losing solution accuracy under a multilayer parallel loop nesting framework. The low-carbon economic dispatch method of IESs is composed of the extended carbon emission flow model, low-carbon economic dispatch model, and the parallel multidimensional approximate dynamic programming algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on E14-H6-G6 and E57-H12-G12 systems.
