Abstract:Advanced network analysis and control tools in energy management systems depend on a reliable real-time database provided by power system state estimation (SE). The processing of gross errors— bad data (BD)— is considered an essential SE step in such a context. It is widely recognized that the adverse conditions with weak network observability hinder the identification and correction of multiple BD, a process notorious for its time-consuming nature. This paper proposes a method for facilitating the processing of BD in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) measurements using phasor measurement units (PMUs). The main objective is to strategically allocate a limited number of PMUs to allow the phasor-aided state estimation (PHASE), which offers the advantage of effectively handling single and multiple BD. Tests with the IEEE 14-, 30-, and 118-bus systems are conducted to demonstrate the practical application of handling BD, including adverse conditions such as network spots with low redundant measurements.
